Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, the U.N. climate panel's chief scientist, represented the IPCC in Oslo. Appearing alongside Al Gore at the award ceremony, the press conferences, and almost all the official functions, Pachauri carried himself with dignity and quiet assurance. Standing in the shadow of Gore is a tough and unenviable role. But what Pachauri lacked in international celebrity and political prestige, he made up for with wit and sheer intelligence.
