At 227 feet below sea level and with no natural outlet, the Salton Sea is fetid, stagnant and increasingly polluted. The air is heavy and thick with brine flies. At the height of summer, the heat is crushing with temperatures routinely hovering around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
