Working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vesselproject.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vessel Project<\/a>, a Phoenix-based theater ensemble, I created a series of photographs of elaborately costumed figures set against the badlands of the Painted Desert.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">The images were presented as part of a series of &#8220;atmospheric&#8221; performances in front of live audiences at a number of venues in Arizona, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesaartscenter.com\/index.php\/events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spark Festival<\/a> in Mesa, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glendaleaz.com\/arts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Art Program<\/a> in Glendale, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/phxart.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phoenix Art Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">When we presented the piece at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesaartscenter.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mesa Arts Center<\/a>\u2014which had commissioned the project\u2014the entire complex became a moving art gallery of sorts, with pictures flowing across walls, ceilings, floors, and even people in the audience. in a variety of formats and venues over the years, including magazines, gallery shows, books and film. But this was the first time I had used still photography as part of an interactive performance piece.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">The project was covered by the Phoenix news media and even garnered some attention from the academic community. It was described in Louis E. Catron and Scott Shattuck\u2019s book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1478611251\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Director\u2019s Vision:\u00a0Play Direction from Analysis to Production<\/a>\u00a0as well the scholarly journal\u00a0<em>Theatre Topics<\/em> (see <a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/690019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Four Principles about Site-Specific Theatre: A Conversation on Architecture, Bodies, and Presence<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">The Vessel Project was founded in 1995 by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rachelbowditch.com\/Artist_Bio.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rachel Bowditch<\/a>, a respected performance artist and theater director who teaches at Arizona State University.
