After a season of unusually heavy rainfall, the Colorado River broke through an irrigation canal and poured into California&#8217;s Coachella and Imperial valleys. The flooding continued for nearly two years before engineers were able to repair the breach. By then a vast lake had formed that covered almost four hundred square miles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">Over the next half-century, runoff from the Imperial Valley&#8217;s huge farming operations offset much of the annual evaporation and kept the lake viable. The place soon became an inland destination, attracting boaters, water skiers, and vacationers. Anglers flocked to the sea after it was stocked with fish from the Gulf of California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">By the 1950s, resorts and subdivisions began cropping up along the shore. The agricultural runoff feeding the lake was driving up its salinity, making the ecosystem increasingly uninhabitable for fish and the birds that fed on them. The runoff was also laden with pesticides, heavy metals and even raw sewage from across the Mexican border.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">In the late 1970s and early 1980s, record rainfall coupled with unregulated runoff from nearby farms led to flooding. The Salton Sea has no natural outlet, so when the water level rose it inundated many of the communities along the shore, devastating businesses and forcing out local residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">The floodwaters gradually receded, but the health of the sea has continued to deteriorate in recent decades. It&#8217;s now at a critical tipping point. The lake is rapidly drying up. The fish are gone. The air is foul and hazardous to breathe. And little remains of the once-thriving communities and resorts along the shore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">What is playing out at the Salton Sea is more than simply a story of boom and bust, as it&#8217;s sometimes portrayed in the media. As the shoreline recedes, contaminants in the lakebed from a century\u2019s worth of agricultural runoff are exposed to the air. When the wind kicks up, these pollutants create toxic dust clouds that pose health risks not only to residents of surrounding communities but to people throughout southern California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: adobe-garamond-pro, lora, serif; font-size: 21px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 34px; letter-spacing: -0.001em; margin-bottom: 34px;\">For decades federal and state officials largely ignored the problems at the Salton Sea. Some restoration efforts are finally underway, but most experts agree that the projects are too small in scale and too far behind schedule to do more than mitigate the worst effects of the crisis. I have continued to document the decline of the sea since then, turning the series into a long-term documentary project that now spans the better part of two decades. The dead tilapia that regularly washed up on shore have been replaced by dead birds\u2014like this pelican found near Desert Shores. Wildlife biologists don&#8217;t know why so many birds are dying, but they believe the cause is starvation. Some of it flows into the lake from the New River and its tributaries on the south shore, as seen here. The New River has been called the most polluted waterway in the United States.
