I’m an editorial and documentary photographer based in southern California. My specialties include event photography, editorial assignments, commercial work, and documentary projects.
My photographs have appeared in books, newspapers and magazines worldwide. Publications include Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, GQ, Elle Décor, Marie Claire, Outside, Sierra and National Geographic Traveler.
My images have also been widely exhibited at museums and shows, including the “Living” exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, the “Art in an Ephemeral Age” show at the Institute of Art and Ideas in England, and the museums of natural history in Santa Barbara and San Diego, California.
I’m perhaps best known for my photographs of Burning Man, a series spanning over a decade of documentary work. The images are featured in a new book, Burning Man: Art on Fire (with Jennifer Raiser and Sidney Erthal), published by Race Point in August 2014. (More info here.)
In addition to my photography, I’m a longtime print and radio journalist. I’m the former host of “Insight and Outlook,” a weekly cultural affairs program heard on National Public Radio stations across the United States.
I was born in Washington D.C. At the age of five, my family moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where I was raised and educated—and where, as a teenager, I taught myself photography.
I returned to the States in my mid-20s and eventually landed on the West Coast. America is built on a tilt, as we know, and everything loose slides to California.
